An alternative view

Google Street View shows you one street at a time. In this one-week experiment, we explored how you might peek into multiple streets at once.

The video shows the actual working prototype, no post-production trickery (on the screen, that is).

Just enough prototyping

To line up the views and create the illusion of a single street, we needed to detect the streets and their directions. When we were unable to get the Java API for Google Maps to work quickly, we instead analyzed the bitmap maps, improvising our own pixel-based algorithms.

It was effective enough to demo our app in person. Having a working prototype also helped shooting the video quickly.
